Khaw Veon Szu, executive director of Gerakan think-tank SEDAR

What happened today is a shame and it shouldn’t have happened. It’s time for both sides to put aside their political differences and put the people’s interest first. So, if the people want the assembly to be dissolved and fresh elections be called then that should be done. This issue is a political one and not a legal one, so the courts are not the correct avenue to address this. The losing side could appeal to a higher court and this will drag on for months. It won’t be resolved by the subsequent sittings. There are social and developmental costs in prolonging this.

Ong Kian Ming, political analyst
Today's event would be seen as a fiasco that would further damage the Barisan Nasional's (BN) reputation amongst the majority of Malaysians. BN may have won the battle when it managed to swear in a speaker of their choice, but Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has won the public relations war, which they can count on as a big plus in gearing up for the next General Elections. After today, more than 50% of Perak's voters would have tipped towards PR.

Ben Suffian, programme director of Merdeka Centre
The way the sitting was carried out degenerated into a farce. It's one battle that BN has won in Perak, but it has entrenched a resentment in the public against BN, costing them the war for the hearts and minds of the people, who are now questioning the legitimacy of the Perak state government.
